

Maya is a Professor in the Marquette School of Languages and is looking forward to teaching as soon as her book tour has been completed. If you engage in a conversation, even if you get coos or just eye contact, it will help your child’s development. It does not matter how wealthy you are or how many books you read to your child, her stresses the importance of actively engaging with a narration with words to the child. Parents can help build up a reading base from ages 0-6. Preparation starts well before then when the child is an infant. Reading does not start at age 6 when the child is in school being exposed to phonics. Maya became more interested in reading when she had her daughter Zora 11 years ago. She attended the Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism for her graduate degree.
